Vidwan Dr. S. Gopakumar, a renowned Mridangam artist, has a distinguished career marked by extensive performances both in India and abroad. With deep roots in a family of traditional musicians, he has inherited a rich legacy from his great grandfather, late Manikutti Bhagavathar, and his grandfather, late Shri Pichandi Bhagavathar, both of whom were associated with the Royal Court of Maharaja Swathi Thirunal of Travancore.
Dr. Gopakumar's musical journey began with early training under Shri Venkattaraman and Shri Rajappa, before he received advanced tutelage from renowned gurus like Kadanad Shri V.K. Gopi, Palghat C.S. Krishnamooorthy, and Parasala Shri Ravi at the Sri Swathi Thirunal Music College. His expertise further developed under the legendary Sangeetha Kalanidhi Dr. T.K. Murthy, with whom he had the privilege of studying through the traditional Gurukulavasam system.
Since 1988, Dr. Gopakumar has been a key faculty member at Bharathiar Palkalaikoodam, Pondicherry, and is currently serving as an Assistant Professor in Mridangam at the institution, which is affiliated with Pondicherry Central University. His mastery of the Mridangam has earned him a prominent place in the media as a Grade Artist with All India Radio and Doordarshan, and he has also featured in numerous private radio and television stations across India and abroad.
Dr. Gopakumar's performances span a wide range of prestigious platforms, including classical music festivals, sabhas, and international events. His work has garnered acclaim for its technical brilliance, rhythmic intricacies, and deep understanding of the art form. He has collaborated with many eminent musicians and has toured extensively, representing the rich tradition of Carnatic percussion to global audiences.
